Cámara Hispana de Comercio entrega $24,000 en becas

La Cámara Hispana de Comercio del Condado de Sonoma celebró este sábado pasado la edición 28 de su gala anual de becas. El tema de la noche fue "Dream Big”, o Sueña en Grande, para la cual entregaron $24,000 en becas a 12 estudiantes de todo el condado de Sonoma que demostraron necesidades económicas y excelencia académica.
Los becarios este año son: Anthony Altamirano, Cristal Cárdenas-Sánchez, Yajaira Frausto, Jonathan López, Griselda Madrigal Lara, Bryan Muñoz, José Rodríguez, Ana Laura Ruiz González, Elisa Silva, Hodalis Deysi Silva-Durán, Alexis Zamudio y Emily Tenorio.
El vicepresidente de Servicios Estudiantiles en Santa Rosa Junior College, y maestro de ceremonias de la noche, Ricardo Navarrete, abrió con la frase: "La educación sigue siendo la gran herramienta de igualdad en nuestra sociedad", dijo tras pedir una ovación de pie para felicitar a los estudiantes y sus padres.
Después de un breve descanso al ritmo de la salsa, interpretado por el instructor de renombre internacional, José Santamaría, la oradora principal Jacqueline Martínez Garcel, directora general de Latino Community Foundation, hizo hincapié en la importancia de educar a los latinos para una economía próspera en los Estados Unidos: "Nuestra economía depende del éxito de cada latino, tenemos que soñar en grande no sólo para obtener puestos de trabajo, pero también estar en mesas directivas". Recordó a los estudiantes el trabajo duro de sus familias, y los animó a convertirse en modelos para las generaciones futuras.
La Cámara Hispana de Comercio ha otorgado 420 becas desde 1989, con un total superior a los $420,000, luego de casi tres décadas. Estuvieron presentes notables ex becarios, como la profesora de Estudios Chicanos y Latinos en Sonoma State University, Mariana G. Martínez, y Esther Lemus, suprocuradora de distrito en el condado de Sonoma.
La noche también sirvió para la recaudación de fondos más grande del año de la Cámara. Por medio de una subasta y donaciones, fueron capaces de recaudar más de $15,000, suma que será igualada por el Consulado Mexicano en San Francisco y utilizado para financiar becas a estudiantes el próximo año. Para cerrar la noche y enviar las mejores vibras a los 12 alumnos a punto de embarcarse al siguiente capítulo de sus vidas, los asistentes tomaron la pista de baile.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Celebrates it's 28th Annual Scholarship Gala

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Sonoma County celebrated this past Saturday its 28th annual scholarship gala. The theme of the night was “Dream Big,” as they awarded $24,000 in scholarships to 12 students throughout Sonoma County who have demonstrated financial need and academic excellence.
This year the recipients were Anthony Altamirano, Cristal Cardenas-Sanchez, Yajaira Frausto, Jonathan Lopez, Griselda Madrigal Lara, Bryan Munoz, Jose Rodriguez, Ana Laura Ruiz Gonzalez, Elisa Silva, Hodalis Deysi Silva-Duran, Alexis Zamudio and Emily Tenorio.
Vice President of Student Services at the Santa Rosa Junior College, and Master of Ceremonies for the night, Ricardo Navarrete opened the evening with an emotional and inspiring introduction of the significance of this event. “Education continues to be the great equalizer in our society,” said Navarrete as he called for a standing ovation to congratulate the accomplishment of the college-bound students and their parents.
After a short break to the rhythm of salsa, performed by world renown salsa instructor Jose Santamaria, we were introduced to keynote speaker, Jacqueline Martinez Garcel, CEO of Latino Community Foundation, who emphasized the importance of educating Latinos for a thriving U.S economy; “Our economy depends on the success of every Latino, we have to dream big to not just get jobs, but sit on boards,” she said, and continued to remind the students to remember the hard work of their families, and to become role models for future generations.
The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has awarded 420 scholarships since 1989, totaling more than $420,000 in almost three decades. In attendance were remarkable alumni of the scholarship including professor of Chicano Latino Studies at Sonoma State University, Mariana G. Martinez and Deputy District Attorney at County of Sonoma, Esther Lemus.
The evening also served as the Chamber’s largest fundraiser of the year. Through an auction and donations they were able to raise more than $15,000 that will be matched by the Mexican Consulate of San Francisco and used to fund next year’s scholarships. And finally, to conclude the night and send the best vibes to the 12 students who are soon to embark on the next chapter of their lives, the attendees took over the dance floor.
